Codemasters' Club Football In Development
Steve @ 4:21 AM EDT
New York May 30, 2002 - Codemasters will digitally recreate Europe's
finest soccer players in striking photo-realistic visual detail for its series of Club Football games, coming to America next year to the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and The Xbox video games system from Microsoft.

Set to revolutionize the soccer games market with its innovative approach the company will be developing individual games for each of seven UK clubs the game is also revolutionary in its technology. Twenty-two players from each of the 15 headline clubs* - including Sami Hyypia, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Dennis Bergkamp, Emanuel Petit, Darius Vassell, Lorenzo Amoruso and Rio Ferdinand - are being individually photographed using a new high-resolution graphical capturing techniques designed, especially for the game. This means that fans will be able to control the most realistic soccer players ever seen in a video game striking right at the heart of soccer fans.

The 15-game Club Football series is absolutely for the fans and they're expecting to play alongside their heroes looking like the real thing, as they'd see them from the terraces or on television, explains Rachel Wood, Club Football's Lead Artist. The level of facial detail we¹re working to is very high and will provide an immersive and thoroughly believable gaming experience.

A total of 330 players from the featured headline clubs will have their faces scanned in meticulous detail. The scans will be used in a bespoke facial modeling system created by the Club Football team. It is a massive effort in the Club Football project, itself Codemasters¹ most ambitious game development and publishing exercise to date. The process involves a team of artists visiting each of the clubs to meet with the players. A digital photography rig is used to capture images of each player¹s head. These images are then taken by the team¹s artists and through a highly developed technique, used to construct an accurate 3D model of the player¹s head.

It's a great system that gives myself and the other artists an incredible level of detail to work with. All the headline clubs¹ player models are portrayed at a level of detail that is closer to photo-realism than we have ever been able to achieve, Wood continues. No other soccer game has previously gone to such lengths to ensure that its real-name players are portrayed as accurately as they are in Club Football.

Codemasters' series of Club Football titles is currently under development and scheduled to launch in America next year for PlayStation®2 and Xbox.

Bam! Entertainment Unveils Reign of Fire
Steve @ 2:06 PM EDT
Bam! Entertainment, has today finally bowed to public demand and unveiled its infamous Reign of Fire dragons. Based on the upcoming multi-million dollar Spyglass Entertainment movie, Reign of Fire is a sizzling, fast-paced game that's currently in development at Kuju Entertainment's London based studio.

Reign of Fire will throw gamers into ferocious battles between two ancient species fighting for survival: humans and dragons. An action-packed third-person arcade adventure set in the near future, players will choose to take the side of either the humans - struggling to fight back against their seemingly insurmountable foes - or the dragons themselves: an awesome army of fire-breathing beasts intent on incinerating everything in their path.

The dragons have remained illusive until today, despite the fact they are the stars of Reign of Fire. Players will encounter several breeds of the deadly beasts throughout the game, either on the receiving end of their awesomely destructive powers or even better still, in the firing seat themselves. Attached to this email you'll find one of the many astounding PlayStation 2 screenshots that finally unveil the mysterious mammals.

The game is split into two sections: the human and dragon stories. In the highly destructive dragon missions, players will assume the role of just one of the winged beasts taking over the world. This player dragon looks astoundingly life-like and utilises a skinned animation system to create organic looking and fluid movement. The beast will realistically bank, back pedal, climb, hover, and dive across the post-apocalyptic looking landscape. With the final model being built with approximately 60 bones, the animators on the project have developed a frighteningly authentic looking dragon.

This player dragon will continue to evolve throughout the course of the game, beginning as a young inexperienced animal with only the most basic of destructive abilities: the Fireball - its main destructive weapon, Napalm Breath - used to spray close-range damage and to set fire to crops, livestock and enemies, and finally the ability to pick up objects (then drop them on your enemies). All of these abilities improve as the dragon ages and the player progresses through the game: for example when the player first picks up objects they may only be able to manage small items, such as livestock or humans, but by the end of the game they will be throwing jeeps and APC's!

In addition to the player dragon there are eight other breeds plaguing the earth, many of which the player dragon will cooperate with throughout the game, all of which are highly evolved and capable of cataclysmic devastation.

Three of these are land-bound dragons: Jakyls, Land Tanks and Pitchers:
Jakyls are young dragons that swarm across the ground in packs like reptilian wolves, ramming vehicles and eating humans as they go. These are often herded by flying dragons to flush out human survivors hiding underground.

Pitchers will sit in wait on their huge nests where Jakyls sometimes take refuge. Pitchers will wait for humans or food to appear, throwing out the young dragons at anything that ventures too close.

Land Tanks are huge, dark green dragons that are similar to a Triceratops in form and size. They are slow-moving but incredibly strong and will charge and spew napalm from their nostrils when confronted. These ancient dragons are far too old, heavy and cumbersome to be supported by their ragged wings.

The five other dragons are air-based: Spitfires, Fireballers, Dive Bombers, Napalm Breathers and The Bull.
Spitfires are small dragons. They are very agile, will spit small fireballs, and can be easily killed. They tend to hunt in groups, swarming together in the air.

Fireballers are red-scaled, mid-sized dragons that will be found flying low and scaling hillsides. They attack with strafing runs, firing large fireballs at targeted enemies.

Dive Bombers are larger dragons with yellow markings on their scales, they swoop to pick-up Quad Bikes, motorcycles and other small vehicles. These are then dropped on either the human player or N.P.C. allies.

Napalm Breathers are one of the most destructive dragon types - these orange-scaled dragons swoop, and hover above a target before unleashing an uninterrupted stream of napalm like a flame-thrower, moving its head from side to side.

Despite the dangerous nature of all these animals, the biggest, most ferocious and deadly is by far The Bull.

Reign of Fire will be available on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Cube and Game Boy Advance in October 2002. For more information on this and other BAM! products check out www.bam4fun.com

Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing In Training
    Steve @ 1:52 PM EDT
Audley Harrison, the Olympic gold super-heavyweight championship boxer has revealed that one of the hardest challenges of his career was not winning Commonwealth gold or even beating Julius Long recently in just two rounds, but taking on Codemasters' Jon Hare.

Audley trained out of shape Jon Hare and games designer Justin Forrest as professional boxers to assist in their understanding of the sport before the launch of new video game, Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing, in which he features.

Jon and Justin trained with Audley to to understand the intensity, brutality and dedication to the sport so they could ensure that Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing for PlayStation 2 and Xbox was the most realistic boxing game created and was what boxing fans were demanding.

The gaming experts were instructed to train three times a day and learn the techniques, skills and manoeuvres required by a professional boxer.

Under the watchful eye of Audley, the designers learnt how to punch correctly, shadow box, conduct pad boxing, increase their overall fitness and stamina and develop the right mental attitude to get into the ring.

Jon Hare, chief games designer at Codemasters said "This extra insight has been invaluable and by the end of our training, we really understood the strength and mentality of a professional boxer. We wanted to recreate the adrenaline rush and the power and speed of boxing in the game itself."

Audley Harrison commented that "It takes true grit and determination to become a professional fighter. I was happy to show these guys what the world of boxing is really like because I want fans of the sport to be able to play a realistic and adrenaline packed game that gets as close to the bone as possible. You have to be prepared to work 24/7 to win in the ring and this was just a taster of what life is like as a boxer."

E3 2002 Day 3: Splinter Cell To Be Xbox Exclusive
    Steve @ 2:32 PM EDT
LOS ANGELES, 23rd May 2002 - Xbox today announced that Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell from Ubi Soft, a third-person stealth action title based on the Tom Clancy universe and one of the hottest games on show at E3 2002, is a console exclusive for the Xbox video game system from Microsoft in 2002.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell will release in time for the lucrative Christmas 2002 market exclusively on Xbox, with a PC version to appear by the end of the year. Xbox is the lead development platform for the game, which has been designed to take full advantage of the advanced graphics and sound capabilities of Xbox. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell will also feature online elements using the recently announced Xbox Live service.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell is a third person stealth action game featuring cyber-terrorism, shadow agencies, and covert operations, and is set in the realistic, highly detailed geopolitical universe as portrayed by Tom Clancy. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell will grant players access to the highest echelons of national security, where shadowy operatives have the freedom to do whatever it takes to safeguard America. In Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, the player controls Sam Fisher, a field operative of a secretive "black-ops" NSA sub-agency called Third Echelon. Sam Fisher is geared up to infiltrate high-security strongholds, seize critical intelligence, destroy threatening data and neutralise the enemy - all without leaving a trace. Developed by Ubi Soft's Montreal Studio in Canada, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell is a unique experience that will have the player thinly skate on the fine line that separates fact from fiction.

“Xbox is the ideal platform to premiere Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell,” said Yves Guillemot, President and CEO, Ubi Soft Entertainment. “We’re using the Xbox hardware to truly realise the vision we had for the game, and to implement some fantastic special effects. For instance, the character can be moved in front of a working movie projector and the movie realistically projects on the character’s back with the appropriate lighting effects, just like real life. Little touches like that are making this game really come alive, and were possible thanks to the powerful capabilities of Xbox. We’re also looking to take advantage of Xbox Live to extend the experience.”

“Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell is shaping up to be the game of the show at E3 2002 - we’re thrilled to welcome this must-have game to the Xbox portfolio,” said Robbie Bach, Chief Xbox Officer. “Gamers will need to prepare for a gaming experience like no other that makes the most of the advanced Xbox capabilities. And it’s a console-exclusive for Xbox, which shows that the world’s best game designers choose Xbox to bring their visions to life.”

Redefining the image of the proverbial “mad scientist,” players take on the personality of Dr. Muto, a genius mad scientist whose latest experiment accidentally destroyed his home planet, except for his laboratory. With his ingenious morphing technology, Muto hopes to rebuild his destroyed world by harvesting resources from other nearby planets while dashing through a stylized universe -- encountering dangerous challenges, freakish monstrosities, and battling his arch nemesis, the evil Professor Burnitall.

As Dr. Muto, players forge through 22 vast levels on four distinct planetscapes: from the junkyard world of Totltec, to the half-drowned water world of Aquem, through the smog-choked skies of Flotos, and finally, the forbidden mines of Mazon. Armed with his newest invention – the Splizz-gun – Dr. Muto morphs himself into a variety of DNA-spliced-up creatures including an alien-spider, miniature mouse and hulking gorilla. By morphing, Dr. Muto gains each creature’s abilities and physical attributes – such as the ability to cling to webs, squeeze into tight spaces, and breathe underwater – all to better crush, outwit and outlast more than ten different enemies.

  • Experiment with the fauna found throughout each world, as players complete DNA formulas they need to morph into six different creatures, each with unique abilities.

  • Overcome more than a dozen different enemy types including cybernetically modified robo-dogs and rent-a-cops.
  • Ready yourself for a full-on battle with the chief boss of each world before battling face-to-face with your arch nemesis, the evil Professor Burnitall, for universal supremacy.

The first "Shrek" title to be released under this agreement is expected to launch on multiple platforms simultaneously with the theatrical debut of the "Shrek" sequel.

"Shrek," the critically acclaimed computer-generated movie was one of the highest grossing films for 2001 with worldwide box office revenues of nearly $500 million. Additionally, "Shrek" is the best-selling DVD title of all time and was the #1 video release for 2001.

TDK's "Shrek"-based interactive entertainment titles have been tremendously successful worldwide with sales exceeding one million units to date. The majority of the games are available in six languages in North and South America, Europe and Australia. TDK will continue to exclusively produce, develop, market and distribute original "Shrek"-themed games on all applicable platforms worldwide for calendar 2002 and 2003.

"The agreement with TDK Mediactive fits perfectly with Activision's strategy of developing and publishing games for all video platforms based on proven, brand-name properties," said Ron Doornink, President and COO of Activision, Inc. "And what a property to collaborate on. 'Shrek' reinvented the traditional fairy tale with its colorful characters, sarcastic wit and rich computer-generated animations and today is one of the premier animated film and video game franchises. We are thrilled to extend our existing Activision Value relationship with TDK Mediactive into next generation platform games, and believe the properties we intend to share will form the beginning of a very powerful relationship."

"Our agreement is a win-win opportunity for TDK Mediactive and Activision," said Vincent Bitetti, TDK Mediactive CEO. "It unites the substantial strengths and worldwide reach of both our organizations while serving to both expand and diversify both of our businesses. In teaming with Activision, we are substantially expanding the market and brand 'fire power' we can collectively bring to games, leading off with our larger than life 'Shrek' franchise. We are confident this partnership will lead to even greater success with the 'Shrek' sequel games."

"TDK Mediactive was early to recognize and champion the value of the Shrek videogame franchise and did a phenomenal job in managing the property," said Brad Globe, head of DreamWorks Consumer Products. "We view their teaming with Activision as a significant boost for 'Shrek,' as under their combined effort and reach we expect the 'Shrek' franchise will achieve even greater heights of interactive game play and retail performance."

Officially licensed by the NHL and the NHLPA, NHL Hitz 20-03 unleashes a total hockey experience with even more visually stunning graphics, lightning-fast, extreme-style hockey gameplay and realistic NHL attributes, plus Hitz signature hard-checking, adrenaline-style sports action.

As the only dedicated adrenaline-style hockey videogame franchise for next-generation platforms, NHL Hitz 20-03 showcases over-the-top 3-on-3 (plus goalies) gameplay with players who leap, glide, check, pass and score on would-be defenders. This newest version of Hitz runs up the score on the hockey videogame category with new features such as the all-new franchise mode (for PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube), which enhances the single gamer experience by giving users the power to create a team from infancy, grow that team through international competition, earn a franchise, and eventually compete for the Stanley Cup .

"NHL Hitz 20-03 offers more of what has made the Hitz franchise so popular among gamers, hockey fans and pro players," said Helene Sheeler, vice president of marketing, Midway. "We have kept in all the features that gamers loved about Hitz, but evolved the game to include bigger and better animations, much improved artificial intelligence and numerous all-new gameplay modes."

Going for the gold, Midway signed an exclusive deal with Canada's 2002 Olympic Gold Medalist, Chris Pronger. NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2002--Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. announced today that Rockstar Games, in conjunction with Remedy Entertainment, has begun development of Max Payne 2, a sequel to the blockbuster hit Max Payne.

Max Payne 2 is expected to ship in calendar 2003.

Originally developed for the PC by Remedy Entertainment and produced by 3D Realms, Max Payne debuted as an award winning and top selling PC game in July 2001. PlayStation(R)2 and Xbox(TM) versions of the game were shipped in December 2001, and both achieved immediate critical and commercial success. Global shipments of the Max Payne franchise have exceeded 2.75 million units to date.

Take-Two also announced that it has acquired ownership of the Max Payne brand and all intellectual property rights associated with the brand, including trademarks, copyrights, characters, perpetual license to utilize proprietary technologies, including the Max Payne game engine and associated "Bullet Time(TM)" technology, and rights to license fees from ancillary Max Payne brand extensions such as cinema, television and literary productions.

Take-Two purchased the Max Payne property from Remedy Entertainment and Apogee Software in exchange for $10 million in cash and 969,932 shares of restricted common stock, in addition to certain future development incentives.

Kelly Sumner, Chief Executive Officer said, "A critical component of Take-Two's corporate strategy is to control the intellectual property rights to our key brands and as a result, build the most value for our company. Max Payne has been one of our most successful product franchises to date. The ownership of this top-selling brand allows us to broadly capitalize on the continued strength of the product on multiple platforms, and extend the brand with exciting sequels as well as providing opportunities for extending the brand to other forms of entertainment."

Scott Miller, Chief Executive Officer of 3D Realms commented, "This is a precedent-setting deal for Take-Two, Remedy and 3D Realms -the first time in our industry a highly successful IP alone has changed ownership hands. This deal validates our strategy for developing strong character-based games. Take-Two benefits tremendously by having full control of the Max Payne brand going forward and being able to properly leverage it to its full potential."
