Mad Catz Introduces the Blaster
Steve @ 2:31 PM EDT
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 23, 2002 - Mad Catz Interactive, Inc., a leading manufacturer of video game accessories, today announced the launch of the Mad Catz Blaster, the first-to-market light gun for the Xbox video game system from Microsoft.
This product will be available for $39.99 in stores beginning October 2002 in conjunction with the much-anticipated launch of SEGA's "The House of the Dead(TM) III."
Mad Catz, SEGA(R), and Microsoft have been co-developing the Mad Catz Blaster for "The House of the Dead III" over the past 12 months in an attempt to define the light gun protocol for Xbox. Mad Catz' Blaster identifies a better way to transmit data from the light gun, the television and the Xbox gaming system and takes full advantage of the powerful capabilities of Xbox.
"As the leading designer of innovative accessories, Mad Catz has expanded its line of peripherals to include the first-to-market light gun for Xbox," said Darren Richardson, President and COO of Mad Catz, Inc. "The Mad Catz Blaster is the first gun for any console to incorporate a `Shotgun' firing mode, enabling players to fire five rounds at a time. We anticipate great success for Mad Catz' Blaster and SEGA's `The House of the Dead III,' both of which use next generation technology."
The Mad Catz Blaster for Xbox features three firing modes, "Auto", "Burst", and "Shotgun" and an auto-reload function that gives players unlimited ammunition for an enhanced gaming experience. "Auto" allows players to shoot 360 rounds per minute, similar to a fully automatic weapon. "Burst" allows players to fire three rounds per second with a single trigger pull. "Shotgun" is a new feature exclusive to Mad Catz' Blaster and allows five rounds to be fired in a star-like pattern on and around the target point. This enables a larger surface area to be blasted with one trigger pull. Other features include rubberized grips for increased comfort and high precision optics, making the Blaster the most accurate gun available.
In SEGA's "The House of the Dead III," players will defy the undead with shotgun in hand as they explore a post-apocalyptic wasteland of unrelenting terror. Fans of the series will thrill to beautifully rendered gore, time-sensitive gameplay and a wide variety of branching paths. Gamers take out wave after wave of horrific zombies as they travel different routes and advance the storyline, uncovering new secrets and hidden areas along the way. "The House of the Dead III" is available October 29 exclusively for Xbox.

Sega Releases Toe Jam & Earl III Exclusively for Xbox
Steve @ 1:25 PM EDT
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 2002--SEGA(R) of America, Inc. today announced the release of "ToeJam & Earl(TM) III: Mission to Earth" exclusively for the Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft(R). "ToeJam and Earl III: Mission to Earth" delivers a comic adventure of cosmic proportions, blending phat beats, risque humor and truckloads of attitude into one seriously funkified quest to save the universe. The game also features special downloadable content via Xbox Live(TM), which will be available when the service launches on Nov. 15.
The 12 Sacred Albums of Funk have been stolen and it's up to gamers playing as ToeJam, Big Earl and their new gal-pal Latisha, to journey to Earth and return the vanished vinyls to Lamont the Funkopotamous, source of all Funk in the known universe. Scattered throughout more than 30 massive, randomly generated levels, the 12 Sacred Albums of Funk will ultimately give players the power to square off against the dreaded Anti-Funk and save the universe.
As gamers explore Earth they will battle hordes of decidedly un-funky Earthlings -- from insane drill-wielding dentists and perky cheerleaders to medusa babies in walkers. Players must master the ways of Funk-Fu and make use of scores of gift-wrapped power-ups, ranging from Icarus Wings to the Funkmobile, to convert the clueless Earthlings to the ways of Funk.
"SEGA has a history of both making and breaking the rules of video game design, and 'ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth' is a perfect example of the innovative, genre-bending approach to game design that has made SEGA a leader in the industry," said Mike Fischer, vice president, entertainment marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "A daring blend of action, adventure, music and humor, 'ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth' is the triumphant return of two of the most memorable video game characters of the 16-bit era."
Gamers can choose to play as ToeJam, Earl or Latisha, with each character bringing their own strengths, weaknesses and trademark personality into the mix. Additional playable characters will be available via download on Xbox Live. The game also features dozens of mini-games, rhythm matching challenges and sub-quests, keeping gameplay fresh. An innovative cooperative two-player mode lets players double team the Earthlings in style via a dynamically splitting screen.
With the game's 30-plus levels generated randomly, "ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth" offers nearly endless replayability. Every time a player starts a new game, the geography of levels will be different, enemies will be in different locations, and items will be hidden in new places. A series of five hub levels, one for each environment, remain the same every time, acting as a "home base" for gamers on their quest to retrieve the 12 Sacred Albums of Funk.
The game features five gorgeously rendered environments: snow, desert, country, urban and water. New environments will be made available via download on Xbox Live. The levels are filled with jaw-dropping special effects only possible on Xbox, including detailed reflections and real-time shadow effects, which show shadows moving across the entire environment as the sun moves through the sky -- even across the characters' bodies.
"'Toe Jam and Earl III: Mission to Earth' once again proves how SEGA is making the Xbox shine," said Ed Fries, vice president, Xbox Game Content. "With awesome game play, funky music, killer graphics and a defining sense of humor, the newest installment of this hilarious fan favorite series will make even the most cynical gamer laugh out loud."

Acclaim Responds to Controversy Involving BMX XXX
Steve @ 1:22 PM EDT
GLEN COVE, NY, October 17, 2002 - Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. today responded to the widespread controversy surrounding the launch of its forthcoming mature rated release, BMX XXX.
"We believe that there is a general, unfair characterization of the interactive entertainment industry and as a result, our product is being held to an entirely different standard than other entertainment media with comparable content, including movies, television and radio," said Greg Fischbach, Co-Chairman and CEO of Acclaim. "According to NPD's August report, more than 60 percent of all next-generation hardware owners are men over the age of 18, and this combined with the fact that last year's number one selling game was mature rated, fully supports our belief in the demand for this type of content."
"While we acknowledge that we are setting new benchmarks with BMX XXX, we are disappointed that there are groups who fail to see how this humorous product is truly on par with such widely accepted mainstream entertainment experiences, including movies like American Pie, and TV shows like The Sopranos and Sex and the City," added Fischbach. "As a leading publisher, we fully believe that consumers should have a right to choose their entertainment, and with that right comes the importance of responsible consumerism."
"This product was not designed for, nor is it being marketed to consumers under the age of 17, and we fully support the Electronic Software Rating Board and encourage consumers to utilize their rating systems to make educated purchases," concluded Fischbach.
The first action sports video game designed specifically for today's mature gaming audience, BMX XXX features scripted jokes and events created by some of Hollywood's top comedic writers, more than 2,000 BMX tricks and an incredible in-game soundtrack featuring today's top artists. The product's official web site, www.bmxxxx.com, debuted a trailer, which has been downloaded more than 500,000 times since the beginning of the month.

Steve @ 4:44 PM EDT
New York – October 14, 2002 – The engines are revving as Colin McRae Rally 3 prepares to race onto store shelves this November for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and the Xbox video game system from Microsoft.
In addition to the realistic car handling the series is renowned for, Colin McRae Rally 3 will immerse the player in the action with an incredible audio performance. On PlayStation2 the game’s audio is in Dolby Pro Logic and on Xbox it features Dolby Digital 5.1 with 5-speaker support. The game feeds the roaring atmospheric sounds through the speakers as if four of them were positioned right on the wheels of McRae’s Ford Focus RS WRC. Switch to different game views and the sound positioning changes, effectively moving the sound in relation to the Focus’ engine position.
“The effect is incredible and we are confident it’s the best audio in any racing game,” says Guy Wilday, Codemasters’ producer of the Colin McRae Rally series. “The audio technicians have aimed for perfection all the way through the development of the games sound – from the recording of effects using a rally-spec Ford Focus, through to this incredible sensation of surround sound.“

Panzer Dragoon Orta In Detail
Steve @ 3:03 PM EDT
Thousands of years after the fall of the ancient civilization the world is a hostile and arid place to be, a fallen age in history. The few remaining human tribes, who live scattered across the wasteland, are in desperate fear of biogenetic terrors - powerful artifacts born out of blasphemy.
In the midst of the continued conflict over precious water resources the Empire, who wish to gain control over the organic weapons from the old age through military pressure, have discovered a production factory from the ruins of the Old Century and succeeded in creating their own organic weapon - the Dragon.
The key to restore peace in this distorted world is a mysterious girl captive under ball and chain, her name is Orta.
The game is divided into 10 stages, tied together with SGI and hardware rendered cut- scenes to portray the story. There are sub-scenarios and various other artifacts to interact with in order to tell the story, these also intend to give you the perspective from the Empire's point-of-view, but have yet to be confirmed. Stages will be action packed, encompassing fierce fighting, swooping down canyons and will not be too linear. There will be multiple ways of reaching the end battle depending on whether or not you are able to complete certain tasks, for example, accelerate towards the shutter before it closes to progress through otherwise you'll be forced to take another path.
He is your companion and your ride through the game, capable of accelerating to intense speeds, running on the ground and performing a number of attacks -
This is the main weapon, fired from his mouth and can hit multiple targets. The power level increases as the Dragon morphs (see below)
The player sitting on the Dragon can fire from the weapon carried in hand. It is capable of hitting enemy fire and targeting weaker enemy points effectively. The power level increases as the Dragon morphs (see below)
This is only available when using the highest-spec Dragon type. It makes it possible to attack enemy forces while sucking up the enemy's hp, in turn, replenishing your own.
This is a type of special weapon with immense destructive power.
Players can adjust the speed of the Dragon to gain the appropriate position for attacking enemy forces. It is also particularly useful for navigating the environment.
There is a gauge evident in the game, which determines the Dragon's power, how this increases and decreases is not confirmed. There are 3 stages of metamorphosis and it seems that you can change this at will, providing the gauge is at the required level. This adds a level of strategy, which the player must adopt for certain situations-
- Normal Type
Basic features, well balanced.
- Heavy Attack Type
The lock on effect is more accurate and inflicts a greater level of damage, but there is less lock on options.
- High Spec Type
Has the highest level of mobility. Lock on laser is not accessible through this type but Homing Glide can be utilised to great effect.

Hitman 2 Commerical Banned By Major Networks
Steve @ 9:37 PM EDT
Hitman2: Silent Assassin ***Official TV Spot BANNED by major Networks!!!***
An interesting twist on Friday news, we come with a follow-up report on our recently premiered Hitman2 TV Spot . As part of our massive TV campaign for Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, we had slated our original creative to air across selected major cable networks, however, in an interesting turn of events, numerous networks opted NOT to run the spot as it was originally intended. VH-1, MTV, MTV 2, TNN, UPN, ABC Sports, Comedy Central, Sci-fi, and USA all declined to air the original spot! The following is some of the reasoning behind denial of the commercial...
"Glorifies Violence"... "strong violence depicted "
"Over the top sexual content"
"the game looked a little too realistic and that people might not know that it was just a game"
In an effort to support the games strong momentum, and continue to bring Hitman 2 to the people, we've tapped into the games epic "orchestral score" and made a brand new Hitman 2 commercial that has been approved by almost all of the networks. Unfortunately, ABC still declined to have anything to do with Hitman, but that's...ok. Take an exclusive, FIRST EVER look at this new, "less controversial" commercial! Hopefully this will prevent the game from feeling the same wrath of censorship.

The Best NBA Simulation Returns With A New Franchise Mode, ESPN Telecast-Style Presentation, Unprecedented Player Control and Online GamePlay
SEGA(R) of America, Inc. announced today the simultaneous release of "SEGA Sports(TM) NBA 2K3" for the PlayStation(R) 2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft(R) and the Nintendo GameCube(TM). Critically acclaimed for its authentic and entertaining simulation of the NBA game, "SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" takes the genre to unprecedented levels of realism with unmatched player and ball physics, an ESPN telecast-style presentation, ground-breaking animations, an in-depth franchise mode and full online gameplay on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Developed by Visual Concepts Entertainment, a SEGA development studio, "SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" captures all of the nuances of the NBA game, from Allen Iverson's signature crossover to high-flying dunks from the league's top skywalkers.
"The `SEGA Sports NBA 2K' series has consistently delivered the type of hoops simulation experience that NBA fans crave and it has quickly become a cornerstone of the SEGA Sports brand," said Tom Nichols, vice president of sports marketing, SEGA of America, Inc.
"In the development of `SEGA Sports NBA 2K3,' we concentrated on perfecting both the gameplay and visual elements that are truly specific to the NBA," said Greg Thomas, president of Visual Concepts Entertainment, a SEGA development studio. "As a result, gamers are closer to the NBA hardwood in `SEGA Sports NBA 2K3' than any other NBA video game."
Building off the strong gameplay foundation of the "SEGA Sports NBA 2K" series, gameplay enhancements to "SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" include the ability to control pass type and direction, fake a pass, freely adjust lay-ups and dunks in mid-air and lunge out of bounds for loose balls. In the paint, an enhanced low-post game lets players fake, pivot, drop-step and even front the offensive player, while total control rebounding allows effective blocking out and board work. Enhanced ball and player physics produces more realistic caroms off the rim, while accurate impact collisions on hard fouls and blocks mimic the precise nature of the NBA.
The game's visual improvements are equally as striking. Specular Highlighting, a graphical technique designed to show players sweating during the game, is among the game's key visual enhancements. "SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" also features the incredibly detailed player faces and lifelike player expressions that more effectively convey the emotions of an NBA game. Players are instantly recognizable and react realistically to the action around them. From the players' tattoos to the mascots, each individual 3D model is designed to match the exact look of its real-world counterpart. Rounding out the package is a complete ESPN telecast presentation, which includes TV-style player introductions, dynamic replays and scoreboards and graphics overlays.
"SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" returns the series to the online arena with the introduction of full online play and downloadable content for both PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Gamers from around the country will be able to challenge one another over the Internet, check their win/loss records, download roster updates and maintain a list of favorite opponents. Additionally, the SEGA Sports Challenge, appearing in the SEGA Sports 2K3 games, allows fans to compare their offline stats against other players nationwide.
Joining the returning Exhibition, Tournament, Season and Practice Modes are reconstructed Franchise and Street Modes. The Franchise Mode allows users the option of signing free agents and coaches, scouting and drafting rookies, making trades and even drafting graduating seniors from "SEGA Sports(TM) NCAA(R) College Basketball 2K3." The Street Mode, which features legendary real-world street courts from around the country, now lets players customize their own street team by selecting any player from the current NBA rosters, one of the all-decade legends teams or from their roster of created players. Other exciting new features in the Street Mode include animated crowds and the addition of variable weather including rain and fog.
Big Mutha Truckers
Steve @ 1:51 PM EDT
Empire's Trucking extravaganza Big Mutha Truckers has been deemed too rude to be shown before the 9PM TV watershed by the BACC. Bear in mind this is the same BACC that allowed a rather sexual beer ad which blatantly suggests fellatio from a vacuum cleaner for the robotic drinker.
Yet again it seems to be either a case of games paranoia by the powers that be or simply the age-old problem of big blue chip companies not having to play by the same set of rules as the smaller companies.
Chris East Head of Marketing & PR for Empire Interactive Europe Limited screamed down the phone "It's outrageous, just because the name Big Mutha Truckers is a tenuous play on a' well known' phrase, we've been banned from doing a rather splendid TV ad. Although perhaps submitting the script with a truck running over an old lady's dog didn't help our case."
Big Mutha Truckers will be released on November 29th, probably after 21:00 hours when it won't pervert the nation.
Developed by Eutechnyx, proven developers in the racing genre with titles like Le Mans 24 Hours and F1 World Grand Prix 2000 under their belt.

Metal Dungeon from Xicat Coming November
Steve @ 1:35 PM EDT
Xicat Interactive, the publisher of the award-winning role-player, Gothic, brings RPG action to the Xbox™ video game system from Microsoft, with the release of Metal Dungeon on the 22nd November 2002.
In the distant future, man and machine are one. Twisted, robotic cyborgs walk the planet ravaging the land and destroying all that they find. Mankind retreats to metal fortresses, and holds out for the future. Underneath the scorched earth, evil awaits, magic returns to life, and terrible creatures of myth are revived. A group of battle cyborgs must now journey below the surface of the planet, to tame the Metal Dungeon.
"Metal Dungeon is an exciting RPG with a some cool twists. Players battle with cyborg monsters deep in a futuristic dungeon, while 'building' (enhancing) your ultimate cyborg warrior. It's exactly the kind of dungeon crawl/RPG that the Xbox needs and will futher expand the already-strong Xbox portfolio," says John Linn, Creative Director at Xicat Interactive.
Aransas is a war-torn world that has been in conflict for as long as history can recall. Humans "enhance" their warriors through cyborg technology and the ancient art of magic. Deep within a vast underground weapons complex known as Force Valley, one faction of humans tries to gain the upper hand by creating super-enhanced cyborgs. Something goes terribly wrong. One of their experimental cyborgs 'Magin', escapes and takes over the weapons laboratory/facility creating an army of enhanced weaponic monsters, turning Force Valley into a Metal Dungeon.
Teams of enhanced humans (cyborgs) are enlisted to take back the facility. Players assemble a team to plunge into the depths and root out the monsters. Players choose from 5 character types – fencer, striker, analyzer, caster and broader, in building their teams, and may be further enhanced by finding or buying chips and implanting them into their characters. Players can add to their team by finding, and re-animating the corpses of fallen warriors; transforming them into one of 5 unlockable character classes. Metal Dungeon can be played by a single player (who may control up to 6 characters) or by multiple players, each controlling their own character and their actions simultaneously.
Battles with cyborg monsters are ferocious within the Metal Dungeon, and will take all the skill, strategy and knowledge of your characters' talents and abilities. Experience is gained in battles with monsters within the 10 cavernous dungeon levels or by means of gladiatorial games in the "trial hall". Levels are never the same twice due to MD's succession of random dungeon layouts.
In the Metal Dungeon, enhanced humans of the future come face to face with the dark evils of the past. You never know when a pile of scrap metal, flesh and sinew might come bounding from a dark corner to feast on your robotic bones. Metal Dungeon will be released for Xbox on 22nd November 2002.
Five character types to choose from: Fencer, Striker, Analyzer, Caster and Broader
Ten huge dungeon levels to explore and conquer
Randomly generating dungeons, so you never play the same level twice
Totally customizable advancement system lets you build characters any way you choose.
Use chips and implants to enhance your cyborgs by adding spells, abilities and equipment
Create and swap your powerful group of adventurers, and discover new bodies to revive in the grounds below.
